Objectives
The main focus of this module is the further development of research skills and knowledge to underpin the use of research to inform clinical practice. With reference to the concepts of evidence-based practice, clinical effectiveness, clinical governance and ethical principles, students will discuss the relationship between healthcare policy and responsibility for healthcare practice. The strengths and limitations of quantitative and qualitative approaches to research in health and social care will be considered. Students will develop an understanding of the basic methods of quantitative research, including data collection and analysis including common statistical tools used in quantitative data analysis. Basic methods of qualitative research, including data collection and analysis will also be discussed. Students will critically appraise both qualitative and quantitative research publications and identify and discuss the facilitators and barriers to the application of research in practice.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts of evidence-based practice, clinical effectiveness, clinical governance and ethical principles
- Understand the relationship between healthcare policy and responsibility for evidence based healthcare practice;
- demonstrate knowledge of the main strengths and limitations of quantitative and qualitative approaches to research in health and social care
- Understand the basic methods of quantitative research, including data collection and analysis
- Know the purpose and use of basic understanding of common statistical techniques used in quantitative data analysis;
- understand the basic methods of qualitative research, including data collection and analysis
- Have developed the knowledge and skills to critically appraise both qualitative and quantitative research publications
- Demonstrate knowledge factors which represent barriers to, or can facilitate the application of research in practice both qualitative and quantitative research publications
- Demonstrate knowledge factors which represent barriers to, or can facilitate the application of research in practice.

The relationship between evidence based working and professional accountability.
The implementation of evidence based research findings into 'real world' healthcare practice.

Private study
Independent learning will be based in accessing VLE based materials including a reusable learning object on Evidence Based Practice developed by the University of Sheffield and reviewing other selected online materials on critical appraisal.Private study will comprise completion of directed reading (including book chapters, journal articles and research methods scenarios) for discussion in weekly tutorials.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
