Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- show understanding of historical and theoretical approaches to race
- make connections between constructions of race in the Americas, South Asia and Africa
- handle and interpret a range of primary sources including literary texts, visual images, film, music, speeches, newspapers and organizational records.
Skills outcomes
Will develop the skills listed below:

Syllabus
'Approaches to Race' is a core module for the interdisciplinary MA programme 'Race and Resistance'. Students on this module will be encouraged to explore the distinctiveness and interconnections between constructions of race, caste and ethnicity across a range of historical periods and areas ranging from the eighteenth century until the present day, and from South Asia to the Americas.
Topics include: Whiteness and Power; Beauty, Sexuality & Race; Diaspora and Migration; Imperialism and Anti-Racism: Africa and African America; Gandhi, King and the legacy of non-violence; and post-colonial Leeds.
Students will use a wide range of primary and secondary sources, including novels, autobiography, poetry, film, speeches, newspapers and organizational records.
