Module summary

Are you thinking about a career in teaching? What do you know about teaching? Would you like to have a go? LEED 1040 Introduction to PE Teaching offers you the opportunity to explore some of these questions.We arrange your placement, and alongside this you will be taught how to plan and evaluate your teaching and will be supported through workshops, tutorials and by your placement host.Designated a Special Skills module, and so available to students across all degree programmes across all levels.If you are a returning student you should enrol for this module online; following enrolment you will receive an email from Sport & Physical Activity requesting attendance at interview. You will also need to complete a DBS (formerly Criminal Records Bureau) check, ideally before you leave University for the summer vacation or as soon as possible.

Objectives

- Be able to reflect on their experience of observing and/or participating in teaching.
- Make judgements and decisions about following a career in teaching.
- Have developed and be able to evidence a number of transferable skills, including time management, presentation, oral and written communication, observational, analytical and reflective skills.
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the way in which their role in the placement has impacted on and is impacted upon by others with whom they are working.

Learning outcomes
- How to undertake reflection on teaching practice.
- How to deliver an activity in a teaching context.
- The basic principles of pedagogy.
- The requirements for following a career in teaching.

Skills outcomes
By taking this module students will develop skills in and understanding of
- Teaching pedagogy.
- Delivering a PE lesson – managing a learning environment.
- Reflective practice.


Syllabus

- Complete a placement whereby students observe/support lessons.
- Be checked against the DBS (formally CRB).
- Complete an Activity Record, documenting progress through the module.
- Be introduced to some of the principles behind teaching, planning and observation.
- Undertake an evaluation of the effectiveness of the delivery observed and/or implemented, leading to the development of an overall evaluation of the impact of the delivery programme as a whole.
- Attend individual tutorials to monitor and discuss progress.
