Module summary
This is an opportunity to explore the principles of rehabilitation along with the key skills and attributes required to operate as a supporting specialist to performance sport. This module will cover the foundation of supporting and rehabilitating the injured athlete.A key component of the module is to experience practical techniques used for rehabilitation and practice in producing a plan for rehabilitation of an injured athlete. The module also provides a great insight into the practice of working as a strength and conditioning coach alongside a physiotherapist within performance sport support service. Designated a Special Skills module, this is open to students on all degree programmes. On completion of this module, students:- will have developed a foundational understanding of sports injuries and their treatment;
- will have had the opportunity to learn the basics of evidence-based practice when supporting an athlete through the rehabilitation process;
- will have gained an understanding of the role played by strength and conditioning coaches, and supported by physiotherapists when working with an injured athlete.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Identify and analyse a range of different sports injuries and their associated risk factors;
2. Display a knowledge of the psychological considerations related to different sports injuries.
3. Describe evidence-based treatment techniques for an injured athlete and evaluate their efficacy;
4. Identify and analyse different techniques used to restore fitness following an injury and apply them to a rehabilitating athlete;
5. Apply evidence-based practice through the construction of a rehabilitation plan, to facilitate the return to play process for an injured athlete.

- Identifying sports injuries and diagnostic tests;
- Developing knowledge of acute and sub-acute treatments of sport injuries;
- Using evidence to prescribe treatments for sport injuries;
- Understanding psychological considerations around sports injuries and rehabilitation;
- Restoring physical fitness for an injured athlete;
- Creating an evidence-based rehabilitation plan to enable return to play.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Throughout online and in-person delivery the session lead will plan activities and challenges that present formative feedback opportunities. These will include strategies such as;- Online formative quizzes, discussion boards and journals
- Practical session with peer and teacher feedback
- Conditioned situations aimed at testing students against the skill demands of practical environments.
