Module summary

This module is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of research and analysis of specific theme within Sport Development / Education, Performance Sport or Outdoor Learning and Leadership. This module provides students with the opportunity to research a specific area of sport and physical activity leading on from their previous LEED module studies. Each of the themes have a dedicated subject specialist to supervise and guide students. Sport Development / Education:Students will have the opportunity to develop a critical review of the literature surrounding a topic relating to Sport Development or Physical Education. Example topics include:- Governmental Sports Policy;- Physical Activity Programmes;- Changes in the National Curriculum;- Curriculum and Physical Literacy;- Delivering Sport in the UK;- Customer-led approach to sport and physical activity.Students should aim to include contemporary research to support their review and offer their own evidence-based insights.Performance Sport:Students will have the opportunity to develop a critical review of the literature surrounding a topic related to human performance. The theme of this work should be directed towards topics associated with Strength and Conditioning including (but not limited to):- Neuregenic adaptations to training;- Morphological adaptations to training; - Field or gym-based methods of improving cardiorespiratory and metabolic function;- Acute physical preparation strategies (warm-up);- Learning of fundamental movement patterns;- Performance testing methods.Students should aim to include contemporary research to support their review and offer their own evidence-based insights.Outdoor Learning and Leadership:Students will be able to develop their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of an area of interest within this theme by conducting a review and analysis of available research. Example topics include:- How does gender impact learning outside the classroom?- How do outdoor leaders develop a rapport with challenging groups?- How is risk managed in adventurous activities with young children?- An analysis of the effect of outdoor education on primary school children.- How applicable is traditional leadership theory to outdoor leadership?- What evidence is there to support adventure therapy?Students are welcome to bring their own ideas for potential projects, but these should fit broadly under the title of Leadership or Outdoor Learning. Designated a Special Skills module, this module is open to students on all degree programmes. Objectives

The module aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of a particular research area of sport and physical activity and use that knowledge to provide insight, critical analysis and evidence-based conclusions.

Students will develop:
- Skills in the design of a research project focussing on literature researching;
- A high level of written communication skills;
- An understanding of specific research techniques.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Justify the choice of research question within the context of existing research;
- Perform literature searches on a range of appropriate electronic databases using efficient literature searching strategies;
- Make judgments by critically identifying, analysing and evaluating the relevance of facts, principles and theories related to sport and physical activity;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the complex concepts, paradigms, and practices which underpin contemporary debates surrounding Sport and Physical Activity;
- Develop writing skills in order to communicate research to both expert and non-expert audiences.

Syllabus

Students will select/develop a working research project in consultation with staff. The title will then be approved by the supervisor and module manager.
- The supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the work in an advisory capacity, but the students will be expected to plan, execute and interpret their own work.
- Projects may be individual or group, insofar as the collection of data may be collaborative, but individual students will use the data to address differing project titles

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Weekly monitoring of the Project Development Report/Log, which will form the basis of the research project.

Registers of attendance at lectures, seminars and individual tutorials kept, with absences followed up by the research supervisor and/or module manager.
