Module summary
This module, together with LING1070 Linguistics 1, covers the core concepts in Linguistics within six strands, three of which are explored within each module. The strands covered in Linguistics 2 are: - Language Acquisition- Meaning and Language Variation and Change. Students will learn about various aspects of first- and second-language acquisition, about various levels at which meaning can be investigated, and how language varies across time, geographical areas and social strata. Students will gain some experience of the breadth of disciplines to which Linguistic skills can be applied, and how these skills can aid understanding of a wide range of social and psychological phenomena.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- understand the basic principles that drive the acquisition of language (as a mother tongue or as a second language);
- identify and comment on the various levels at which meaning can be uncovered;
- understand how language varies across society and across time;
- apply their technical knowledge to lay debates;
- present a well-supported argument using linguistic evidence during tutorial discussions;
- demonstrate more sophisticated skills of data-handling and presentation than in LING1070 Linguistics 1;
- further improve their essay writing skills, through practice and feedback.
Additionally, this module should act as a foundation for further studies in Linguistics and Phonetics, enabling the student to make informed choices of modules for further years.
