Module summary
This module provides students with a thorough understanding of selected topics in phonetics and phonology, such as connected speech phenomena, suprasegmental features of speech, or issues in the phonetics and phonology of particular languages. Each topic is discussed from both theoretical and methodological perspectives. Students learn advanced phonetic and phonological terminology, read research papers and undertake their own original research.Objectives
This module aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of selected topics in phonetics and phonology, a command of advanced phonetic and phonological terminology, an ability to read and evaluate original research in the field, and practical skills in the analysis of speech data.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
1. be thoroughly familiar with selected topic areas in phonetics and phonology
2. have gained advanced knowledge of articulatory and acoustic phonetics, and issues of phonological representation
3. have gained advanced skills in practical phonetic analysis
Syllabus
This module adopts a topic-oriented approach, examining a number of key topic areas in phonetics and phonology from both methodological and theoretical perspectives. The topics vary from year to year. They may relate to, for example, connected speech phenomena, suprasegmental features of speech, disfluency, sociophonetics and sound change, or issues in the phonetics and phonology of particular languages.The topics are introduced and contextualised together at the start of the module, followed by blocks of lectures and seminars dedicated to each topic in turn.

Private study
Students are expected to devote 135 hours of independent study time to this module, with the following suggested breakdown:- reading to keep up with lecture content: (10x4=) 40 hours
- preparation for seminars using the VLE: (5x4=) 20 hours
- self-study using the VLE: (10x2=) 20 hours
- preparation of the essay: 40 hours
- preparation of the assessed analysis task: 15 hours
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The fortnightly seminars are a forum for monitoring students’ progress and use of the self-study materials developed for the module, and for providing formative feedback where relevant. Students receive detailed guidance on how to approach both assessed assignments.Methods of assessment
