Module summary

The module will introduce students to studying at Leeds in order to support their transition to their chosen degree. There are two halves to the content: the first component around academic skills development is available to all students on the module; the second component will introduce students to their chosen degree through a relevant piece of independent work.

Objectives

- To support students' transition to university, including developing an understanding of what to expect as a student and independent learner
- To prepare for study at undergraduate level by developing core skills and knowledge on how to study effectively
- To develop increased confidence in utilising academic study skills and applying these to an original piece of work
- To provide an introduction to the chosen degree subject area and develop an understanding of undergraduate style work
- To develop familiarity with University systems and processes

Learning outcomes
On completion students should be able to:
1. demonstrate their capabilities in a piece of independent work related to degree choice
2. demonstrate their ability to apply relevant study skills techniques to an original piece of work
3. reflect on their motivation to study their subject of choice at degree level and the skills required to do this
4. feel increased confidence in discussing their subject area with an academic tutor
5. understand the format of submission, assessment and feedback for an assignment at university

Skills outcomes
On completion students should be able to:
- compare the differences between studying at school and at university
- identify and interpret academic vocabulary relating to higher education learning
- understand the core academic and study skills required for an undergraduate degree
- apply the most appropriate strategy or technique for different academic tasks
- effectively navigate the University of Leeds' online learning platform


Syllabus

The module consists of two parts:
1. Study skills
2. Subject assignment

The module provides you with an introduction to studying at Leeds. You will undertake an assignment associated with the subject area that you have chosen to study at degree level. You’ll engage with on-line academic skills development resources and individual advice from a tutor in the area to which you are going to progress.

The exact nature of the work undertaken is determined by the school to which you are applying.

-On-line resources available via the VLE to support the development of academic skills
- Tutorial conducted online on VLE, or alternatively via e-mail or Teams.. Tutorials can still be conducted face to face if appropriate for tutor and student.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The students will submit a draft of their assignment to the tutor by e-mail. The draft will be discussed by or e-mail or teams.
