Students should have completed the first year of a single or joint honours in Accounting, Economics, HRM, International Business or Management.

Satisfactory completion of Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure checks (arranged by the Access Academy).

Module summary

Students will complete a child protection course; prepare a pack of financial literacy materials which they will then deliver to teams of school based pupils. In addition each team within a school will be given a sum of money to invest. Students will provide advise and guidance to help each team reach a decision on how to invest the money.

Objectives

To provide students with opportunities to develop their leadership, ICT and communication skills and to reflect upon the role of business and financial education in both the secondary and higher education sectors.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will have acquired knowledge about:
- the role of a mentor;
- ethical issues concerned in such a role;
- practical interpersonal skills in being an effective mentor;
- the use of ICT in the mentoring process;
- the role of business and financial education in both the secondary and higher education sectors.

Syllabus

Students will complete child protection training; receive guidance on financial and investment stragegies. They will then meet a team of school students on a weekly basis over a period of 6-8 weeks as they compete against other teams to develop an investment plan. Students will also provide teaching sessions on financial literacy. In addition they will attend a final day where teams will present their plans to a panel of judges in a 'Dragon's Den style competition'.
