Module summary
Leadership - whether you want a theory based understanding, or have a real desire to contribute to, or to run, an organisation more efficiently now or in the future, this module is for you. It will give you an understanding of your own and others potential and skills. It should help you to look at how you organise yourself and approach activities. Leadership is vital for success in any professional area; the ability to engage co-workers or employees and communicate your ideas effectively to ensure cooperation is something everyone will need. The skills covered in this module offer you the chance to learn how to influence, persuade and lead groups of people, as well as understanding how groups work together and what makes people do what they do.Each 90 minute workshop will be followed by tutorial time of 30 minutes; this will offer a chance for conversation with the students around the topics covered in the workshop. Tutorials will mainly focus on establishment and monitoring of personal objectives and reflective writing.Objectives
On completion of this module students should be able to:- develop in students an understanding of leadership skills and attributes
- make clear the influence of good leadership on the work of inidividauls and groups
- demonstrate the uses and applications of leadership skills, particularly in the work place and especially in business starts ups
- assist students in exploring their own skills set as related to leadership and to help them understand and develop their own leadership style.
Learning outcomes
A student completing this module will:
- understand group processes and group dynamics and how to work effectively with others
- consider their abilities and skills in leadership and how these can be applied
- have a knowledge of leadership and group theory, and be familiar with key theorists
- have an understanding of the key characteristics of leadership
- develop an understanding of their own skills and attributes as related to leadership and understand how they lead
- be able to explain their personal leadership style, and analyse how and why this might be effective.

Students are expected to read widely about different types and styles of leadership and to understand the ways in which they are implemented in businesses of different types.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Attendance will be expected at every session, and non-attendance without good reason followed up.Each session is interactive with group work, discussion and elevator pitches.
- Involvement is key to this process. Progress issues will be addressed during the interactive workshop sessions and tutorials.
- Students complete a standard group work contribution form as part of the assessment submission.
