Module summary

The module is aimed at international business studies students taking a JYA or Erasmus exchange, plus non business studies students from across the university interested in improving their generic business knowledge.This module helps you develop an understanding of current issues in business and how they impact on companies in practice. Leading academics from a range of disciplines are invited to provide a theoretical context behind recent and current world events and local employers from small and medium sized industries from across the region contribute to seminars to consider some of the practical implications behind these theoretical perspectives. The module also improves business communication skills and enhances commercial awareness and student employability. You complete a business report based on a business issue and utilize the knowledge gained to demonstrate commercial awareness and improved employability.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to enable then to enhance their commercial awareness and business communication skills by studying contemporary business issues and highlighting how these issues affect a range of organisations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically evaluate a range of contemporary business issues and apply the knowledge gained to different business sectors and organisations
- Articulate their understanding and awareness of such issues and produce recommendations in the form of a business report
- Apply a knowledge of key business issues to evidence commercial awareness
- Analyse a range of contemporary business issues and evaluate their impact on organisations

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Evidence good written communication skills – using clear, concise language to produce a well-structured report
- Utilise self-awareness and an ability to articulate commercial awareness when applying for graduate jobs


Syllabus

Indicative content
Module content may change in response to developing contemporary themes, but are likely to include; the role of emerging markets in the global economy and models of international expansion; the current status of the Eurozone; contemporary issues in accounting and finance; complex organisational behaviour; big data in a digital economy; advertising to millennials; ethical issues in contemporary business and the impact of socially responsible restructuring. Students also have lectures and seminars on business report writing and on how to apply subject based knowledge to improve commercial awareness and improve employability.

Private study

Students will need to independently research companies of interest and regularly read the business news in order to prepare for seminar discussions and complete the assessed work.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be given the opportunity to submit a draft of one section of their report and receive feedback on this before the final submission.
