Module summary
The aim of this module is to provide students with a set of tools to assist in their understanding of the way that organisations are managed. These tools include an understanding of the interrelated nature of areas of management such as innovation, technology, information, and leadership. The module also aims to provide both an understanding of the basic concepts underlying some of these key areas, and an introduction to current management thinking and research in them. The module is assessed by an assignment which requires students to apply knowledge and skills to a real-world situation, as well as by an examination which draws on short case study material as well as short answer questions.Objectives
To identify the major internal and external influences in managing a business; to outline the basic structures involved in a business organisation; to understand theories and models that describe/prescribe the process of management; to make, justify and evaluate decisions about business situations; to understand the interrelationship between functional management and general management processes.Syllabus
Introduction: developing a whole systems perspective to the nature of management, foundations of management understanding, managing in a global environment and the environment and corporate culture. Planning: organisational goal setting; strategy formulation and implementation and managerial decision making. Organising: fundamentals, structural design, innovation and change, human resource management. The lectures will be supported by seminars and self managed study focusing on applying module concepts to two case studies.
