Objectives

The module provides an understanding of the challenges and issues faced by international banks, with a focus on internationalisation, regulation, stability and financial innovation. The course assumes an international perspective with numerous cross-country comparisons.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to critically assess:
- the international banking and financial environment
- the nature of, and reasons for, the rapidly changing international banking and financial environment
- the problems faced by international regulation
- the nature of and reasons for systemic distress and failure in the banking industry


Syllabus

This module examines the theories of financial intermediation and information asymmetry, the development and nature of international banking, central banking, banking regulation, the nature and management of risk in banking, the causes and consequences of failure amongst banking and other financial organisations.
