Objectives

Quantitative Methods is a Masters level module intended to provide students with a thorough grounding in the effective use of mathematical and statistical techniques in business and finance. The module provides students with a thorough grounding in a wide range of numerical tools and techniques from basic descriptive statistics, through regression to time series methods. The module places a strong emphasis on the interpretation and communication of quantitative information and analysis as a basis for other applied and research based modules.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to critically assess:
- key statistical concepts, principals and methods
- mathematical techniques in business and finance
- the use of these statistical techniques in real world environments

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- demonstrate advance numerical and quantitative skills

- synthesis and communicate statistical information and analysis
- apply a range of statistical tools to conduct empirical research into business and finance issues
- report on the meaning of statistical outputs and its relevance to business decisions


Syllabus

Indicative content:
The syllabus covers some of the core statistical techniques for business and finance. Indicative content includes: descriptive statistics, probability and probability distributions, sampling and inference, hypothesis testing and confidence intervals, simple and multivariate regression, basic time series analysis and limited dependent variable estimation.

This could include a variety of activities, such as reading, watching videos, question practice and exam preparation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will have the opportunity to take a practice exam and will receive a formative feedback on it. Formative feedback will be also provided on exercises covered in seminars.
