Module summary
This module is intended for doctoral students who plan to use qualitative methods in their PhD and want to learn more about the opportunities and the challenges of qualitative research. This is an advanced module so students should already have a grounding in the basics of qualitative research. The classes will be a mixture of formal input to provide students with the essential information, discussion and interactive tasks to put into practice the knowledge they have gained during the sessions. On the final day will be an opportunity for students to apply their acquired knowledge to their own research problems by presenting their work to the rest of the group.Objectives
The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge of the range of state of the art qualitative methods and research designs used in the field of business and management. Students will also gain an understanding of the issues involved in the selection of appropriate qualitative methods according to their research topic. Students will be exposed to insights in the practice of qualitative research and will share experience in collecting, analyzing and reporting from qualitative research.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to critically assess:
- The range of qualitative research strategies and a variety of advanced qualitative methods used in business and management research
- Current best practice in the analysis of qualitative data
- Ways in which qualitative data can be theorized and the issues to consider
- The main challenges associated with publishing qualitative research and how to overcome these obstacles.

On completion of this module students will be able to:
- Select the appropriate qualitative research design and methods to be used in addressing specific research problems;
- Articulate both in writing and through oral presentation the factors involved in developing a coherent and effective research design

- The craft of qualitative research
- Linguistic based methods: discourse analysis, conversation analysis and narrative methods
- Visual methods: video and photo-elicitation
- Data analysis and theorising
- Writing and publishing qualitative work
