Objectives
This module focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of establishing and maintaining relationships with internal stakeholders and communicating to them during times of organisational change. It aims to ensure that students are aware of the complex socio-political factors that impact upon the organisation and their role within it. The module is structured to develop key skills to draw upon when developing, implementing and evaluating broader change programmes.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Describe and evaluate the major themes which impact on internal communication and change management including the key themes facing internal communication managers
- Recognise and appraise the political, economic, social, technical and environmental factors that influence communication and change within the organisation
- Interpret and critically reflect upon the research literature on internal communication, change management and employee engagement
- Identify models and theories for planning, implementing and delivering communication strategies during times of organisational change
- Recognise the positioning and role of internal communication managers within organisations and consultancies

Issues around internal communications and change management by reference to topics including:
The Role and function of internal communications
The positioning and role of the internal communication manager within the organisation
Organisational culture, power and communication
Communicating during change
Understanding internal stakeholder needs
Employee engagement
Technological advances and their use in internal communications and change strategies
Internal communication and legislation: the law, benchmarking and best practice
Evaluation tools and techniques

Private study
Students will be required to carry out approximately 24 hours of pre reading and to undertake further research and study following the teaching period in order to complete their individual assignments.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress will be monitored regularly through seminars. In seminars, students will work in small groups on exercises and presentations, and will be given feedback on their understanding, knowledge and progress each week.‘Drop in’ sessions, organised in addition to the seminars, will allow students to discuss a short plan for their coursework (3000 word essay) on a one-to-one basis with the module leader, to gain feedback on their approach to the coursework. Alternatively, a short plan can be submitted to the module leader electronically for feedback.
