Objectives

This module examines how a wide range of statistical techniques and numerical tools can be applied to real-world business problems. Emphasis is placed on showing how managers and practitioners can effectively use such techniques to evaluate and enhance different aspects of organizational performance and formulate policies in the global economy.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Measure different aspects of organizational performance, and understand how it is influenced by factors such as international expansion and innovation.
- Employ a wide range of quantitative methods, critically evaluate their benefits and problems, and use such techniques in practice in order to solve business problems.
- Use SPSS/PASW to estimate and present descriptive statistics for both quantitative and qualitative data.
- Use regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between two (or more) variables.
- Carry out hypothesis testing and understand the strategic importance of the results.

Skills outcomes
Learn to select and apply the appropriate statistical techniques to solve certain problems while using statistical software and interpret the results.

Syllabus

Quantitative Methods and Statistics; Descriptive statistics and data presentation; measures of location and dispersion; the nature, properties and use of probability distributions; hypothesis testing; confidence intervals; correlation between variables; linear relationships; curvilinear relationships; s-shape relationships; time-series, cross-sectional and panel-data analysis; linear regression and forecasting; simple and multivariate regression; reverse causality; interaction effects and moderated regression analysis; logistic regression using dependent variables that are qualitative, SPSS.
