GCSE Mathematics or equivalent. This module is not available to students who have a Maths A-level (or equivalent)

Module summary

This module covers basic concepts in statistics and probability which have applications in Business and Economics.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

(a) process data to produce histograms etc and determine means, medians and standard deviation for discrete, continuous, grouped, ungrouped data;
(b) calculate probabilities, in particular in connection with the binomial distribution;
(c) use the standard normal curve (i) to approximate to binomial probabilities and (ii) to obtain confidence intervals.

- Independent events
- Discrete random variables: Probability function and cumulative distribution function

- Binomial and Poisson distributions
- Normal distribution: Reduction to standard form
- Use of tables.
