Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:a) Appreciate the role of deterministic and stochastic models in informatics;
b) Understand the purposes of simulation;
c) Model certain phenomena using differential equation;
d) Fit models using data.
Syllabus
Modelling of physical phenomena, and modelling of data.
1. What is a model? Stochastic and Deterministic Modelling;
2. Vectors (operations, including dot product), norm;
3. Matrices (operations, inverse including Gauss elimination);
4. Differentiation. Introduction to 1st order differential equations;
5. Applications: Carbon dating; population growth;
6. Fitting models - principle of least squares;
7. Modelling data empirically. Regression;
8. Simple comparison of approaches: deterministic vs stochastic;
9. Purposes of simulation;
10. Simulation summaries and diagnostics.
