Module summary
This module will engage students in group-based project work. Project titles will be drawn from a range of commercial, industrial, educational or academic (research) projects, to reflect a range of career options that are available to mathematicians. The mathematical content will be appropriate for a Level 2 module.Students will evaluate and develop their professional skills through engaging in a group project, culminating in a written mathematical report, an oral presentation and some other item which will depend on the nature of the project, such as a report for a client, a piece of software, webpage, etc. All students will be expected to make equivalent contributions to the group effort, and the students will also be evaluated on their ability to work as a team.Students will also undertake a skills audit at the start of the module, prepare a CV, research a company for a mock interview, and participate in an interview workshop. By the end of the module, students will be able to appraise their own skills and make an action plan to prepare them for future employment.Objectives
By the end of the module, students should be better able to:- Understand where mathematics may be used in a professional/commercial environment.
- Use knowledge of mathematics to deliver a project based on an “industrial/business problem”.
- Work as part of a team to deliver a project.
- Evaluate their effectiveness as a team player.
- Write a technical/mathematical report on the mathematics used in the project.
- Make a presentation that is suitable for a variety of audiences.
- Know what career pathways are available to mathematicians.
- Evaluate their current transferable skills and make a plan to develop them further.

• Research a company in preparation for an interview
Syllabus
Introduction to the module and team building exercise/ice breaker.
Group project:
Managing a project and working as a project team;
Introduction to the projects and assignment of students to projects;
Project development workshops;
Preparation/practice for final presentations;
Presentation session.
Career Skills:
Audit of current skills and identification of gaps. Employer presentation(s) on career profiles and what skills employers look for;
Writing a CV workshop and CV preparation;
Employer led workshop on interviews and assessment centres. Research into a company in preparation for an interview (graduate job adverts will be used);
Interview workshop (students work in teams of three, interviewer, applicant and observer, then rotate);
Final session – summary of the module, final skills audit and action planning.

Group project will be monitored via scheduled workshops.CV writing and interview workshop are completed during the course.
