Module summary
In the first part of the module, students will take part in a series of career planning workshops on topics such as CV writing, job applications, and interviews. Students will be able to appraise their own skills and be able to plan for future job application processes.In the second part of the module students will complete a group-based project. Project titles will be drawn from a range of commercial, industrial, educational, social, or academic (research) projects, to reflect a range of career options that are available to mathematicians. Students will evaluate and develop their professional skills through engaging in a group project, culminating in a written mathematical report, an oral presentation and other outputs such as a report for a client, a piece of software, webpage, or similar, depending on the nature of the project. All students will be expected to make equivalent contributions to the group effort. There will be workshops on ethical topics such as team working, and ethics in the work place. Students will be evaluated on their outputs, presentations, on their ability to work professionally and as a team, and on their ability to reflect on ethical issues.Objectives
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Have a better understanding of the career pathways available to mathematicians, and where mathematics may be used in a professional/commercial environment.
- Evaluate their current transferrable skills and make a plan to develop them further.
- Be prepared for the job application process.
- Use knowledge of mathematics to deliver a project based on an “industrial/business problem”.
- Work as part of a team to deliver a project.
- Evaluate their effectiveness as a team player.
- Write a technical/mathematical report on the mathematics used in the project.
- Make a presentation that is suitable for a variety of audiences.
- Reflect on ethical issues related to a specific topic.
