Prerequisite: MATH2730 Informal description: Following on from the second year module on analysis of variance, more complex models allowing more factors and their interactions will be covered. The principles of experimental design will be introduced through experiments based on two level factors, and then applied to the problem of response surfaces. To study the theoretical and practical aspects of experimental design and analysis.On completion of this module, students should be able to:
(a) analyse and interpret results from factorial experiments;
(b) design factorial experiments;
(c) model a response surface;
(d) perform each of the above using a statistical package.
Syllabus
Following on from the second year module on analysis of variance, more complex models allowing more factors and their interactions will be covered. The principles of experimental design will be introduced through experiments based on two level factors, and then applied to the problem of response surfaces.
Topics covered include:
1. Factorial Experiments. Constraints, estimable functions and contrasts in analysis of variance. Revision of two and three factor models. Interactions. Polynomial contrasts for equally spaced quantitative effects.
2. Experimental Design. factorial experiments. Confounding. Use of half and quarter replicates.
3. Response Surfaces. Response surfaces analysis using linear and quadratic models. Method of steepest ascent/descent and interpretation of quadratic models.
