Module summary

This module will develop skills which will be useful preparation for the dissertation, potential further research, and in employment. This will include presentation skills and teamwork, some of which will be developed through real-life case studies.

Objectives

This module is intended to: (i) prepare students for their dissertation by teaching independent learning skills; (ii) improve employability through the use of teamwork, and improving oral and written communication skills. This will be done through a series of mini-assignments, including the use of real-world case-based projects in data science.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
a) develop a systematic search strategy to find material on a given topic,
b) use the library, Web of Science and other electronic bibliographical resources to find journal articles and other information,
c) use a systematic referencing convention and bibliographic tools,
d) word process mathematical text,
e) develop written and oral communication skills,
f) present a substantial mini-project.


Syllabus

- Using the Library catalogue, journals, Web of Science, use of the Web, evaluation of material, referencing conventions.
- Mathematical word processing (using LaTeX).
- Reading and understanding journal articles.
- Writing reports for different audiences.
- Writing posters and giving presentations.

Private study

The students will complete a series of assignments, including a typesetting exercise, completing a short report with an oral presentation (to be completed individually), a medium-length individual report, and some group work which will be assessed through a joint report, presentation and poster. The group work will make use of case studies.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring by regular worksheets and achievement in supervised practical sessions.

There is no resit available for the group poster presentation (25%) and the teamwork aspect of the group project (which equates to 5%) for this module. If the module is failed, the marks for these elements will be carried forward and added to the resit marks achieved for the rest of the coursework with the same weighting as listed above.
