Module summary
Modern biological experiments produce large data sets involving information related to DNA. This module gives the basic biological background before looking at a range of data types and methods to analyse them.Objectives
To explore a range of statistical methods pertinient to the analysis of scientific data relating to DNA.Learning outcomes
To develop an understanding of

4. Statistical modelling of microarrays.

Syllabus
1. Introduction to molecular biology
a) Introduction to cells, chromosomes and DNA
b) Cell division and inheritance
c) Genes, RNA and proteins
2. Evolutionary trees
a) Basic phylogenetic concepts
b) Maximum-parsimony tree construction
c) Distance-matrix tree construction
3.Statistical genetics
a) Basic concepts of genetics
b) Principles of Mendelian inheritance
c) Overview of genetic epidemiology
4. Statistical modelling of microarrays
a) Introduction to microarrays
b) Microarray data preparation
c) Identifying differentially expressed genes
5. Protein motifs and statistical models
6. Forensic science and statistics
