Module summary
This module sets out to introduce students to debates surrounding European identity in relation to race. It will examine the presence of Black populations within Europe at various important moments from the classical period to the present day, examining how they have been represented, described and exhibited. It will also analyse the work of black writers, musicians, film makers and activists to understand how they have constructed and negotiated a Black Europe identity. The module has been devised in response to LUU initiative – ‘Why is my curriculum white?’ and its aim is to diversify the curriculum, especially in the field of languages and cultures.Objectives
To understand how European identities have been contrasted and rethought in relation to questions of race, mainly over the twentieth century, but also drawing on earlier historical periods.To develop an interrogative approach to a variety of source material (paintings, films, newspaper articles, songs).
To discover other relevant material through independent research.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to
- demonstrate detailed knowledge of key developments and debates in European identities have been contrasted and rethought in relation in questions of race.
- discuss how writers, filmmakers and theorists have constructed Black European identities.
- offer critical evaluations of a variety of literary and audio-visual source material.
- make a detailed argument and support this with evidence from primary and/or secondary sources
- devise their own research question for their essay based on an initial literature review, gaining useful research skills in view to the FYP and important intercultural competences for study abroad.
Syllabus
The syllabus will cover subjects such as:
- Blackness and Nationality
- Traces of African history on the European landscape
- The construction of otherness and enduring racial stereotyping
- The counting and labelling of national ethnic minorities
- The Importance of Africa and the Black Atlantic
- Black feminism
- Religion and Blackness
- Black artists/ writers/film makers – Black and European or just European?
The module content will not be static but reflect new research being undertaken by members of the teaching staff.

Private study
Students will be expected to prepare for each lecture and seminar by undertaking private study of set texts and appropriate secondary material. More in-depth reading and viewing will be necessary to prepare for the in-class group presentation, the literature review task and the final student led-essay.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will undertake one non-assessed group presentation in a seminar. The students will be given written feedback on this presentation. The written feedback on the assessed literature review will help to inform the planning and the writing of student essays. Students will also be encouraged to discuss their essay plan and arguments with a tutor in a one to one meeting.Methods of assessment
