Module summary

Students will work towards the production of their own digitised research-based documentary, in English or in any other language, on a topic of their interest for a specific audience of their choice. Students, supported by tutors and other students, will recruit research participants on the basis of their personal connection to the research topic chosen and will carry out audio recorded interviews, in English or in any other language. The interviews will adhere to either oral history methodology, capturing life story narratives, or qualitative research methods, whereby interviewees answer a fixed set of questions. These activities will be carried out in accordance with relevant ethical protocols.Students will be supervised by a member of staff specialised in the topic of their research-based documentary and will be supported with training on digital production, critical engagement and qualitative research and/or oral history methodologies. In case of languages other than English being used, the supervisor will also be competent in that language. In the course of their project Students will develop the necessary skills and attributes to enhance their own professional digital profile. This Final Year project is also an opportunity for students to become responsible digital scholars and make tangible critical contributions in the fields of history, society, politics, language, culture or art to the Global Learning Community.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- Show a critical understanding of key issues related to their own research interests from an anthropological and humanistic perspective;
- Carry out their research in an ethical, socially purposeful and professional manner, sharing the data as appropriate;
- Have a critical understanding of the processes of digital production and dissemination of Open Educational Resources from cultural, educational and legal perspectives;
- Present their research to a wider audience in an engaging yet scholarly way;
- Interpret critically primary data and secondary sources in order to incorporate them into their own research and narrative;
- Use software;
- Design, produce and publish their own audio documentaries.

Learning outcomes
- Critical understanding of qualitative research methods and oral history from a theoretical and practical perspective;
- Understanding of relevant ethical protocols for research;
- Understanding of genres and modes of expression in audio documentary production;
- Scholarly expertise in an area of interest connected to the student's Degree Programme;
- Legal and ethical awareness of Intellectual Property Rights and Open Content cultural and scholar production;
Skills outcomes:
- Advanced communication skills, which will allow students to create their own documentary narration based on their own research and write up a script;
- Research skills which will enable students to prepare, conduct and code their own interviews;
- Critical skills which will enable students to exploit the research data of interviews;
- Competence as users in software for audio transcription and for podcast production.

Weeks 6-7: Group Project (2): Dissemination, engagement and recruitment

Week 9: Practical session on ELAN software
Week 11: Documentary genres, modes of expression, narrative and scripting.
