Pre-requisite qualifications

Admission to a Centre for Translation Studies MA programme with specialisation in Japanese. Centre for Translation Studies MA students who did not take the Admissions Translation Test for Japanese when they applied for the programme must pass this test before they may take this module. Students enrolled on other School of Modern Languages and Cultures postgraduate programmes may, after gaining approval in principle from the Module Manager, be allowed to take this module if they pass the Admissions Translation Test for Japanese.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:- translate confidently from Japanese into English to a professional level in four key text-types.

Syllabus

This module provides both native and non-native speakers of English with a practical course in high-level written translation from Japanese to English. As preparation for translation work in a professional context it presents participants with practice in four different text-types: journalistic, general/administrative, technical/scientific and literary. The module is taught through practical sessions, so there is ample opportunity for discussion of the principles which underlie effective translation strategies.

5 x assignments, 1 for each text-type, and one commentary

Methods of assessment

3 x 2hr timed translations (3 x 20%) (middle and end of Semester One; end of Semester Two)

One take-home translation (1 x 20%) (middle of Semester Two)

One 1000 word linguistic commentary (1 x 20%) (end of Semester Two)
