Pre-requisites
Acceptance onto MAATS programme for Japanese. Participants must have native or near-native ability in Chinese as well as an excellent knowledge of English.Co-requisites

On completion of this module, students should be able to translate confidently from English into Japanese to a professional level in four key text-types.Syllabus
This module provides participants with a practical course in high-level written translation from English into Japanese. As preparation for translation work in a professional context it presents participants with practice in four different text-types: journalistic, general/administrative, technical/scientific and literary. The module is taught through practical sessions so there is ample opportunity for discussion of the principles which underlie effective translation strategies.
Teaching methods
Practical Classes 20 x 2 hours
Methods of assessment
3 x 2hr timed translations (3 x 20%) (middle and end of Semester One; end of Semester Two)
One take-home translation (1 x 20%) (middle of Semester Two)
One 500 word linguistic commentary (1 x 20%) (end of Semester Two)
