Pre-requisite qualifications

PGT entry – normally a good honours degree in a relevant discipline
Applications are also welcome from candidates with relevant [professional experience (e.g. cultural industries, education, arts, creatives) and equivalent qualifications

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

To provide the opportunity for a student to undertake a project (which may be a piece of creative work) which contributes directly to personal/professional development in the form of
either
a directed study in the subject area of a PGT option not available in a specific year
or
development of an area from the degree specialist core module
or
participation under tutor guidance in a School research or EKT project or a specific module from the level two/three undergraduate modules offered in the School e.g. year two collaborative project, year three performance project

On completion of the module the student should be able to:
- identify how a project can be placed within the framework of their personal / professional development;
- negotiate an individual learning contract;
- plan and execute a project under tutor guidance;
- extend and explore discipline specific knowledge and skills in a new context;
- select appropriate means to record, present and analyse their work in relation to stated objectives;
- demonstrate self-direction and effective decision-making;
- assess their own individual strengths and opportunities for future development.

2.Specific: dependent on individual foci : identified in proposal and learning contract completed at start of module

Syllabus

Students negotiate the content and format of the module on an individual basis. The programme of reading will be dependent on the subject under study.
The module syllabus will comprise:
• Formulation and execution of a project for personal/professional development: this may be knowledge and/or skills based
• Consideration of relationships between theory and practice
• Identification and review of relevant literature
• Identification of appropriate medium for communicating the project for its assessment
• Peer presentation

At module registration: identification by module manager of the School projects/modules in which students are eligible to engage.

Exemplar semester schedule
Week 1 - seminar: completion of proposals: identifying an appropriate focus and form of assessment. Allocation of tutor.
Week 3 - tutorial: completion of learning contract
Week 5 - tutorial
Week 7 - tutorial
Week 9 - draft submission
Week 10 - seminar: poster presentations
Week 14 - final submission

An individualised learning contract is established at the start of the module to provide the structure and schedule for the project.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback through individual tutorials (3x1 hour or equivalent) and poster presentation seminar (3hrs)
