Module summary

This module will take place over two semesters to give students the opportunity to gradually deepen their understanding of the theory, practicalities and challenges of philosophising with children, and to develop and refine their practice. In the first semester, students will be trained in the philosophy, pedagogy and practice of philosophising with young children through a series of interactive seminars. In the second semester, students will be placed in a local primary school where they will plan, deliver, and evaluate a series of 9 philosophy sessions for children aged 7-11. Students will work in parallel with teachers who have also been trained in the pedagogical approach 'Philosophy for Children' (P4C).

Objectives

By working with philosophical content in a practical context we hope that students on this module will achieve fresh perspective on their subject along with a better sense of how they might use the skills they are developing in the future.

We also hope that this module will boost student employability and entrepreneurialism, offering Leeds philosophy students the opportunity to develop skills and attributes that will support them into work when they graduate - skills such as teamwork, time management, creative project design and delivery. The module will obviously be of particular interest to students who express an interest in working as teachers in the future.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary philosophical, pedagogical, and practical issues concerning the practice of philosophy with children.
2. Critically assess the arguments of writers from both philosophy and education who are concerned with philosophical, pedagogical and practical issues concerning the practice of philosophy with children.
3. Develop, refine and reflect upon their own practice in the primary classroom.
4. Develop, refine, and defend their own positions on a range of issues concerning the practice of philosophy with children.
