Pre-requisite qualifications

Level 2 BSc Psychology or MPsyc Advanced Psychology. Students must attain an average score of 60% and above in Year 1 and maintain that average in Year 2

Module summary

The Study Abroad programme is an exciting and challenging opportunity for students to gain experience of living and studying in another culture as part of their degree.The study will be arranged with the host institution and it will normally involve taught courses in appropriate subjects that do not duplicate those taken in Leeds.

Objectives

This module provides students with the opportunity to gain experience of living and studying in another culture as part of their degree. During the year abroad students should broaden and deepen their Psychology and related subject knowledge by studying modules that are not available in Leeds, and develop inter-personal and transferable skills related to living in another country.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module, students should:
- have demonstrated their ability to cope with a significant change in their environment and to adapt to a new culture and learning paradigm;
- have broadened their understanding and knowledge within their study of psychology, by choosing modules which complement and extend those they have studied, and those they plan to study in the following year
- have gained a deeper understanding of the culture, institutions and working practices of the country in which they studied;
- have, where appropriate, improved their foreign language skills;
- have developed transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.

- Enhanced practical language skills, both written and oral, in some cases in a language other than English, as required by demands of study in another country.

Syllabus

The syllabus is determined by the modules/courses selected in the overseas University.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Progress is monitored via email correspondence with the School’s study abroad tutor.
- In addition, at the end of each semester, students are required to submit a summary statement of their experiences during the preceding semester.

Students are required to pass the year abroad overall - there is no numerical grade associated with the PSYC9001 study abroad module, it is a Pass/Fail module. At the end of the year abroad the host institution issues a transcript of the students’ achievements. Typically students need to pass a number of credits at the host institution equivalent to the number of credits required to progress to the next year of study on a Leeds UG degree ie. equivalent to 100/120 credits. If a student fails and is eligible to resit the module, they will be required to complete a written assignments reflecting the subjects studied and skills developed whilst on the year abroad. The number and length of the assignments will depend on the number of credits failed and will be determined and communicated to the student by the module leader.
