Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- critically discuss the common infectious diseases relevant to assisted reproduction technology and the importance of infection control in the IVF laboratory;
- know how to establish and maintain quality assurance procedures that are essential to the reliable operation of an IVF laboratory;
- assess the various techniques used in the preparation of male and female gametes for use in IVF and ICSI;
- evaluate tissue culture systems for IVF and embryo culture;
- recognize and assess all stages of pre- and post-implantation embryonic development and placentation.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- design, establish and maintain an IVF laboratory consistent with current regulatory standards operating with state-of-the-art equipment and procedures;
- demonstrate a full comprehension of the importance of quality management in the IVF laboratory;
- demonstrate in-depth knowledge of infection control measures and be able to evaluate risks in the IVF laboratory;
- evaluate and assess the methods used to culture healthy embryos from male and female gametes.
Skills outcomes
Students will learn how to design, establish and manage an IVF Laboratory and to monitor and improve its performance. This will involve knowledge of culture systems and quality control measures.
Syllabus
This module will provide the student with a wide-ranging overview of the topics which are fundamental to embryology. The intention will be to build on students' knowledge to provide an extensive and detailed comprehension of the running of an IVF laboratory and service.

Students will be expected to work in their own time researching online coursework and building their knowledge from the online materials.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Personal tutors are in regular, frequent contact with students by email, internet and telephone. Students have face-to-face tutorials to discuss topical issues and questions, to review progress and assess feedback, with early identification and support for students who are not achieving at a satisfactory level.Methods of assessment

The schedule for submission of the two assessments for full-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology and Assisted Reproduction Technology as detailed above is different to the schedule for submission of the two assessments for the part-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology due to the different schedule for delivery of the two programmes. For the part-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology the essay will be set in semester 2, week 22 for submission in Semester 2, week 24 of year 1 of study; the project will be set in semester 3, S3 in year 1 for submission in semester 2, week 23 of year 2. Resits will be available for both pieces of coursework.
