Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- critically discuss the importance of assisted fertilisation techniques;
- critically assess the techniques required to perform micromanipulation for assisted fertilisation, assisted hatching and embryo biopsy;
- describe and evaluate the theory, procedures and techniques relevant to Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) including PGD and PGS.
- Understand the theory and practical application of stem cells, with particular relevance to artificial gametes.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- Assess and evaluate the latest micromanipulation techniques and their risks and benefits to the patient;
- Have a comprehensive knowledge of Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) including PGD and PGS, and an understanding of PGT services and modern genetic methods for PGT.
- Critically evaluate the epigenetic risks associated with the use of assisted reproduction and micromanipulation technologies and infertility itself.
- Identify and discuss the possible sources of epigenetic disruption arising from ART treatments and/or infertility.
- Discuss the derivation and uses of artificial gametes in fertility treatment.
Skills outcomes
Students will learn the latest micromanipulation techniques; their risks and benefits.
Students will learn how to provide a preimplantation genetic diagnosis service to appropriate patients.
Students will learn the epigenetic disorders resulting from the use of assisted reproduction techniques.
Syllabus
This module will concentrate on the new technologies now available in assisted reproduction. Students will learn the implications of new techniques and gain an appreciation of the equipment and skills involved. Existing and new technologies for micromanipulation, stem cell generation and use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis and their genetic and epigenetic consequences will be discussed and evaluated in relation to assisted conception procedures.

Students will be expected to work in their own time researching online coursework and building their knowledge from the online materials.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Personal tutors are in regular, frequent contact with students by email, internet and telephone. The schedule for submission of the assessment for full-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology and Assisted Reproduction Technology as detailed above is different to the schedule for submission of the assessment for the part-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology due to the different schedule for delivery of the two programmes. For the part-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology the essay will be set in S7 for submission in S13 of year 1 of study. Resits will be available for the coursework.

The format of this assessment is subject to change due to restrictions imposed by Covid-19; the assessment will continue to meet the learning outcomes and the PSRB requirements. The schedule for assessments for full-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology and Assisted Reproduction Technology is different to the schedule for assessments for part-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology. To reflect the different schedule for delivery of the two programmes, the full-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology and Assisted Reproduction Technology online time limited assessments will be set at the end of semester 2. For the part-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology the online time limited assessments will be set at the end of semester 2, week 21 of year 2 of study.
