Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
• assess the HFEA act and code of practice in relation to their duties as embryologists;
• discuss the wider ethical issues of infertility treatment;
• explain the relevant regulations operating in the field of clinical ART as applied internationally to human infertility treatment.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the application of ethics to the practices undertaken by embryologists
- fully comprehend the wider ethical issues involved in infertility treatment
- have a deep understanding of the international regulatory framework within which ART is practised

Skills outcomes
Students will learn how to apply ethics to their daily practices as embryologists.

Syllabus

This module will explore the issues surrounding assisted conception in terms of the law and ethics of the technologies available. The importance of the HFEA and the HFE Act (1990) will be emphasised as will the implications of the Code of Practice for embryologists. Patient issues will be explored such as confidentiality, patient contact, counselling and informed consent. Ethical, cultural and religious aspects and reactions to infertility treatments will also be discussed.

Students will be expected to work in their own time researching online coursework and building their knowledge from the online materials

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Personal tutors are in regular, frequent contact with students by email, internet and telephone. Students have a face-to-face tutorial to review progress and assessment feedback, with early identification and support for students who are not achieving at a satisfactory level.

The schedule for submission of the assessment for full-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology and Assisted Reproduction Technology as detailed above is different to the schedule for submission of the assessment for the part-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology due to the different schedule for delivery of the two programmes. For the part-time MSc/PG Diploma Clinical Embryology the essay will be set in Semester 1 week 5 of year 2 of study for submission in Semester 1 week 11 of year 2 of study. Resits will be available for the coursework.
