Module summary

This module is for students who have completed a beginners’ module in Russian such as SLAV1010 or have equivalent knowledge of the language (CEFR A1). You will develop your receptive and productive skills and gain an understanding of Russophone cultures and societies. By the end of the module you will be able to communicate on a range of everyday topics, have a solid grasp of essential Russian grammar and be able to read and write simple texts.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to extend your knowledge of Russian grammar to approximately A-Level standard and to develop your vocabulary to allow you to speak and write effectively on a number of structured topics covered during the semester. These objectives will be achieved through a series of grammar lectures and small group practical classes with a communicative focus.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will demonstrate your ability to:
1. comprehend and use a range of basic and more sophisticated grammatical constructions, showing a good command of the Russian case system and a basic knowledge of verbal aspect;
2. read and translate annotated texts on a number of topics covered on the module;
3. comprehend authentic spoken Russian relating to the topics covered and respond on these topics using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical constructions;
4. produce structured pieces of creative writing on a number of topics covered during the semester.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will demonstrate your ability to:
5. organise your time effectively and work independently to consolidate material covered in class;
6. show intercultural understanding and awareness of Russophone cultural contexts;
7. adopt effective and proactive language learning strategies.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be short weekly homework tasks and regular written and oral exercises not formally assessed for the purposes of formative feedback. Feedback will also be given on the class test to support revision for the invigilated exam and oral exam. Class participation will also be used to monitor progress.
