Module summary
Beginners Ukrainian 10 credits is for students who have not previously studied Ukrainian. The emphasis is on achieving a basic level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing and an introduction to Ukrainian culture. You may want to learn a new language or you may already have an interest in Ukraine - whatever your reason, this module provides a fascinating insight into the country and the language and will equip you with some basic language ability and intercultural awareness.Objectives
This module introduces students to Ukrainian and develops their ability to communicate at a beginner's level. Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for this level. They should also develop an awareness of Ukrainian culture.Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to use, commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered
2. Understand and make themselves understood by a native speaker in specific contexts
3. Demonstrate a basic awareness of Ukrainian grammar
4. Be able to understand and write basic texts
5. Develop generic linguistic awareness skills that can be applied in the study of other languages
6. Demonstrate a basic awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Ukrainian and English
Skills outcomes
On completion of the module students will:
- have a basic knowledge of the Ukrainian language
- demonstrate good linguistic and analytical skills
- demonstrate good presentation and communication skills
- have acquired skills essential for successful independent language learning
- be familiar with a number of electronic resources for studying Ukrainian and other languages
Syllabus
The module covers topics such as:
- Exchanging personal information about yourself and your family
- Understanding and expressing numbers, the time, days and dates
- Shopping, including describing price colour, size and location
- Talking about likes and dislikes
- Talking about daily routine and leisure activities
- Cultural awareness
