Module summary

This module aims to introduce students to major topics and areas of debate in gender and society. This will be achieved through the study of feminist theory, theories of gender and empirical material. The focus is on gender in contemporary industrial societies. By the end of the module you should have acquired a broad map of current thinking in the sociology of gender as well as an understanding of key theoretical debates. The module will explore the empirical and theoretical interconnections between gender, bodies, sexuality, 'race' and class, and related inequalities.

Objectives

This module aims to:
- Introduce major topics and areas of debate in Gender Studies through the study of recent empirical research and feminist theory, with particular reference to contemporary societies.
- Explore the empirical and theoretical intersections between categories of differentiation such as gender, race, class, sexuality, nationality and (dis)ability.
- Equip students to understand a diverse range of feminist, queer and trans perspectives to avoid universalist approaches to gender.
- Develop a critical understanding of how gender structures contemporary societies and its legacies in the (re)production of social inequalities.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the key debates, main areas of research, and the ethical implications of intervening in gender studies.
2.Showcase awareness and analytical abilities to study gender in their social context, acknowledging diverse experiences, literature and study cases from both the Global North and the Global South.
3. Identify and apply key theories to a range of topics, case studies and materials related to gender in its social contexts.
4. Clearly communicate key ideas, theories, concepts and approaches to study gender and society.
5. Analyse a diverse range of primary and secondary sources to study in-depth the social construction of gender and its intersections.

Skills Learning Outcomes

The module will enable students to:
1. Work independently through self-directed learning, managing both time and resources effectively.
2. Work collaboratively as part of a group.
3. Develop self-directed and collaborative research skills in the area of gender studies.
4. Communicate effectively to a diverse audience through employing both oral and written techniques.
5. Develop analytical and critical thinking skills in the field of gender studies.
