Pre-requisite qualifications
GCSE Single Chemistry or GCSE Double Science.Students on prescribed programmes, without A level chemistry (Grade A-C) or equivalent) have to study this module.

Module summary
The main aim of this module is to provide a background in basic inorganic chemistry theory for students who lack A level Chemistry, drawing throughout on examples taken from the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences. In particular, to equip students with the chemical background to undertake level 2 Earth and Environmental Sciences modules.Objectives
- To provide a background in basic inorganic chemistry theory for students who lack A level Chemistry, drawing throughout on examples taken from the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences.- To equip students with the chemical background to undertake level 2 Earth and Environmental Sciences modules.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Describe the structure of the atom, interpret and predict spectra, and write electron configurations for atoms and ions.
2. Describe the main features of the period table, and how they relate to the electron configuration of elements.
3. Predict the compounds elements will form and their chemical formula.
4. Describe the basis for the different types of chemical bonds (ionic, covalent and metallic bonding), predict the type of bonding in a compound and its physical properties..
5. Predict the products of chemical reactions, write correct chemical notation and balanced chemical equations, taking into account stoichiometry.
6. Understand the mole concept and be able to perform quantitative chemistry calculations.
7. Describe and perform calculations related to chemical equilibria, pH and redox reactions.
8. Describe, comment on and perform calculations relating to case studies in Earth and environmental sciences.
