Module summary

This module provides a catch-up module for Environmental Science students that did not take A Level Physics. The module is primarily to give students a basic grounding in Physics, to enable them to learn effectively within modules in the 2nd year of their Environmental Science degree. The learning of each syllabus topic progresses with applied examples of the Physics within Environmental Science sub-disciplines.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will have acquired an understanding of a range of physics concepts which underpin key areas of environmental science. They will be able to apply their physics knowledge to solve problems of an environmental nature.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have a basic understanding of:
1. the physics of waves,
2. electromagnetic radiation,
3. heat and energy,
4. radioactivity,
5. forces and motion, and
6. the behaviour of fluids and solid materials.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1.Self-managed study skills (working independently, time management, organisational skills)
2. Problem solving and analytical skills
3. Research skills to gather info from web resources
4. Sustainability: An awareness of the broader societal context of science topics.

Students talk with Post-Graduate Research Student demonstrators at each of the 9 weekly examples classes.
Students are provided with annotated marked-script of their essay, and comments on feedback sheet.
