Objectives
The module introduces students to considering life after completion of their undergraduate degree and how to make the most of their time now to assist in the transition from being a university student to employment and careers.The module asks students to think and reflect on their own skills and attributes This is done alongside guest speakers with a wealth of experience of working in environmental careers and the green economy. Students should use this as an opportunity to reflect on the needs of the world of career development and to take stock of their current skills base and assess both their strengths and weaknesses.
The module also involves examining the roles and responsibilities of a selection of careers with an environmental consultancy. Students are invited to make an on line application in a manner identical to that which many recruiters request. The students will also receive an interview for their application. Students are assessed and given feedback on their application and interview. Students are also expected to use this to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses on this process.
There will also be a series of sessions which cover aspects such as: work experience; team working (including the Skills Challenge); and on line media such as Leeds for Life and LinkedIn. The module also includes information on setting up your own business with speakers from within the University and also externally who can explain the wealth of assistance available.
The module concludes with an assessment in the form of an individual career action plan for the next 2-3 years. To construct this students are expected to use their skills profiles, and application/interview performance to reflect on how to make the most of the immediate future to place themselves in the best possible position to compete.
Skills outcomes
The module places considerable emphasis on:
- identifying individual and collective goals and responsibilities and performing in a manner appropriate to these roles;
- evaluating performance as an individual and a team member;
- identifying and working towards targets for personal, academic and career development.
The module places moderate emphasis on:
- communicating appropriately to a variety of audiences in written, verbal and graphical form;
- recognising and respecting the views and opinions of other team members;
- developing the skills necessary for self-managed and lifelong learning (eg working independently, time management and organisation skills);
- developing an adaptable and flexible approach to study and work.
The module places some emphasis on:
- using the Internet critically as a means of communication and a source of information.
