Module summary
This module aims to take students rapidly from about A1-level to about A2-level of the CEFRL, in the use and understanding of written and spoken Portuguese. By the end of this module students will possess sufficient Portuguese to survive in everyday situations in Portuguese-speaking countries in any of the four continents where the language is spoken, and they will demonstrate an ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. The module is taught via four weekly interactive language classes , using a booklet especially devised by our native speaker language tutors. This module is not suitable for students whose level of Portuguese language competence is already A2 or above.Objectives
This module aims to develop students’ Portuguese language skills, cultural understanding, and intercultural competence up to CEFRL A2 level.Teaching is divided into a series of units, developing various important skills, such as the ability to work in a team, to a deadline, and the ability to assimilate and organize language material and present it according to the register, style, and context of an A2 level, with a communicative focus.
Students will also develop an awareness of the cultural expressions and behaviours of the Portuguese-speaking world.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Understand everyday frequently used expressions In Portuguese related to areas of most immediate relevance, with a specific communicative purpose in written and oral contexts.
2. Interact in Portuguese, both through writing and speaking, about simple and everyday tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and everyday matters
3. Acquire knowledge and develop understanding of Portuguese grammar and vocabulary at CEFR Level A2.
4. Produce structured pieces of creative writing in Portuguese on a number of topics covered during the semester.
5. Develop and communicate both through writing and speaking an understanding of different Lusophone cultural aspects.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Written and oral feedback is regularly given to students to identify and address any difficulties at an early stage:* Students will receive formative feedback from the tutor of their oral and written production during language classes.
* Students will receive formative feedback from the tutor on written tasks through homework set weekly.
* Students will have some self-assessed homework, which will be set by the tutor. Answers for those pieces of homework will be available on Minerva.
* Students will receive written feedback on all pieces of assessed work.
