Module summary
This module offers students an introduction to film and literature from Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa, focusing on the interpretations of primary texts and major themes in Lusophone cultures. The module will develop students' critical and analytical skills, as well as requiring them to give oral presentations and to write critical essays on the works covered.Objectives
Students on this module will gain an introduction to key literary and filmic works from Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa and the analysis and interpretation of how they represent key cultural and social processes in the Lusophone world.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
- be able to analyse selected filmic and literary works in terms of their generic specificity
- be familiar with written and literary cultural production in Portuguese from three continents,
- be able to discuss coherently and knowledgeably selected key Portuguese-language literary and filmic texts
- have an insight into cultural reflections of the society and history of Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa.
- have developed analytical and writing skills.
Skills outcomes
Close-reading and interpretation of literary and filmic texts from a variety of historical periods and geographic areas (which involve critical thinking, the ability to detect patterns and draw conclusions, being able to see issues from a variety of viewpoints, cultural awareness)
