Module summary

By the end of this module students will possess sufficient Portuguese to survive in everyday situations in Portuguese-speaking countries in any of the four continents where the language is spoken, and they will demonstrate an ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. The module is taught via two weekly language classes including one grammar/ writing skills-based class, using a booklet especially devised by our language tutors, and one oral/vocabulary class with a native speaker of Portuguese. Students will study grammar both formally and through a close reading of a range of texts supplied by the tutors on the culture and history of Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa.

Objectives


This module aims to take students from about upper A1-level standard to lower B1-level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in the use and understanding of written and spoken Portuguese.

By the end of this module students will possess sufficient Portuguese to survive in everyday situations in Portuguese-speaking countries in any of the four continents where the language is spoken, and they will demonstrate an ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. The principal grammatical structures of the language will be covered, and vocabulary will be built up in key areas of everyday communication.
Students will also develop their ability to reflect on their own learning and to choose and complete autonomously language learning activities.

- Ability to engage in day-to-day oral conversation in Portuguese
- Knowledge of the cultural context of Portuguese-speaking countries.
- Ability to organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasonable argument both orally and in writing.

Skills outcomes
Knowledge of the major future, present and past tenses of Portuguese; ability to read basic texts in Portuguese with a general understanding of their contents; ability to converse at a basic level in Portuguese; Intercultural awareness and skills.


Syllabus

This module will consolidate the grammar covered in SPPO1025 or SPP01080, introducing all the verb tenses of the indicative and introducing more advanced verbal constructions, as well as continuing to expand students' vocabulary range in a variety of lexical fields.
Materials are also chosen with a view to preparing students for the cultural requirements of interaction with proficiency speakers of Portuguese.

Private study


Private study:
- Students are required to prepare for each class, complete regular homework tasks and revise the material covered in the lessons (42 h).
- Additionally they have to prepare and practice for language tests, oral presentation and final exam (43h).

Independent online learning:
- Students are required to undertake guided online independent study each week (15h)

The resit for any written component of this module will take the form of a 1 hour exam. The resit for any oral component will comprise a skype or campus-based 10 minute oral exam.
