Module summary
The module will examine a number of key aspects of Luso-Brazilian cultural identity such as Brazilian and Portuguese cinema and its relationship with society; popular religious practices; the impact of the cult of 'Sebastianism' on the Lusophone world; Afro-Brazilian cultural practices; the relationship between Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking nations in Africa, and the role of popular music in Portuguese society.Objectives
This module will be appropriate for those students with an interest in culture and society in the Portuguese-speaking world. It will provide an insight into various aspects of Lusophone cultural identity.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have an understanding of the relationship between cultural production and socio-historical circumstances in the context of the Portuguese-speaking world. They will be able to analyse written and audio-visual material and will have developed the techniques of independent research as well as oral and written presentation skills.

- Ability to engage with texts in different media from a variety of historical periods and geographic areas (which involves critical thinking, the ability to detect patterns and draw conclusions, being able to see issues from a variety of viewpoints, cultural awareness)
- Essay writing skills (which involve analysing complex information, logical thinking, constructing reasoned arguments, developing insights)
- Presentational skills in both written and spoken form.
- Planning, time management, organisational skills.
