Module summary

In part the module aims to further develop your linguistic skills, taking you up to a Threshold or Intermediate (A-Level) standard. By the end of the module you should be able to follow television and radio programmes in Catalan and understand the main ideas expressed in complex texts regarding both concrete and more abstract subjects. These include technical texts in specialised, professional fields. Also, when interacting with native speakers you should be able to make yourself understood effectively, express a point of view with a degree of fluency and spontaneity. Finally, you will be taught to write on a wide range of subjects, without committing many basic grammatical errors. At the same time, we will further develop your knowledge of Catalan history and culture acquired in Level 1 Catalan Language and Culture. This module will focus on the years 1880-1939, dealing with such themes as the rise of Catalan nationalism and the construction of modern day Catalan symbols of identity, the artistic modernista movement, the standardisation of the Catalan language, and of the social and political conflicts which racked the territory between 1919 and the 1930s.

Objectives

On the language front, this module aims to enhance and consolidate structures learnt in Level 1 Catalan. Students will practise the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) in a variety of contexts. On completing the module they should be able to express themselves in Catalan with a significant degree of fluency. At the same time, the module aims to build on the knowledge of Catalan culture acquired in Level 1, providing students with a more in depth knowledge of the history and culture of the period between the 1880s and 1930s. This is a crucial period in the construction of many of the symbols that are identified with present-day Catalonia.

Learning outcomes
With respect to language skills, on completing this module students are expected to achieve the equivalent of an A-Level standard (level B1 of the European Reference Framework). They should be able to speak everyday Catalan with confidence and also be able to hold basic conversations in specific professional fields. As part of this process they should be able to distinguish between registers and styles. In addition, they will be able to follow - to a significant degree - the meaning of non-specialised radio and television programmes, understand and utilise key grammatical structures, and read relatively complex texts. Regarding Catalan culture, they will have acquired a more detailed knowledge of the period between the 1880s and 1930s, allowing them to recognise the meaning of a range of Catalan identitarian symbols and cultural products, and also to understand the roots of modern day Catalan identity.

Skills outcomes
This module is centred on both developing language skills and understanding culture and identity within a historical context.
