Module summary

This module has two objectives. In the first place, it will take your Catalan to an upper intermediate standard. By the end of this module you should be able to follow television and radio programmes in Catalan and understand the main ideas expressed in complex texts regarding both concrete and more abstract subjects. In addition, you should be able to make yourself understood effectively, express a point of view with a degree of fluency and of spontaneity, and set forth the advantages and the inconveniences of various options. Finally, you will be taught to write on a wide range of subjects, without committing basic grammatical errors. Second, the module aims to build on your knowledge of Catalan history and culture, focusing on the period between the late 1960s and the present day. This will include studying themes such the part Catalonia played in the fall of Francoism, the Catalan culture of protest at the end of the Franco era, and the recent turn towards separatism.

Objectives

With respect to language, this module aims to enhance and consolidate structures learnt in Level 2 Catalan. Students will practise the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in a variety of contexts. At the same time, it will build on students' knowledge of Catalan history and culture, focusing on the period from the 1960s though to the present day.

Learning outcomes
On completing this module students would be expected to achieve the equivalent of an Upper Intermediate level of Catalan (Level B2 of the European Reference Framework). They should be able to speak Catalan with confidence and also be able to hold conversations in specific professional fields. As part of this process they should be able to distinguish between registers and styles. In addition, they will be able to follow, to a significant degree, the meaning of specialised radio and television programmes, understand and utilise key grammatical structures, read relatively complex texts and be able to write on a range of subjects committing few major grammatical errors. At the same time, they will acquire a good understanding of present day Catalan culture and politics.

Syllabus

This module has two key components. First, it will take students up to a post A Level standard, enhancing and consolidating the four basic language skills learnt in Level 2 Catalan (listening, speaking, reading and writing), and practising them in a variety of contexts. Second, it will build of students' knowledge of Catalan history and culture, focusing on the period from the 1960s through to the present day.

Private study

- Working on their autonomous learning portfolio (different activities related to the 4 different language skills)
- Preparing their essay on Catalan traditions and culture (1000 words) (in Catalan)
- Undertaking exercises and other activities in preparation for class
- Revising/preparing for their exam

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students do regular homework, which the teacher goes through in class in the following week. In addition, students will get feedback on the comprehension exercises, on the portfolio, and on the history/culture essay.
