Objectives
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to;
- Describe the prominent theories of motor control and learning that guide research and practice;
- Explain the meaning of skill and skill classification;
- Explain the processes involved in controlling movement;
- Differentiate between measurement techniques used to describe the control and the learning of movement;
- Describe the role of sensory information in the control of voluntary movement;
- Explain the relevance of theories of control to the sporting environment;
- Analyse their own work and that of others critically;
- Write a report using original source material and know how to quote sources and use references.
Skills outcomes
- Managing Knowledge: collecting, selecting, organising and interpreting data, data evaluation and synthesis, use of IT skills.
- Managing Self: planning, time management, independent study.
- Managing Interrelationships: teamwork and cooperation, decision taking, learning from others, peer reviewing, organisation of time.

- Anatomy of CNS (motor system).
- Theories of Control: open vs. closed loop, hierarchical models.
- Theories of Control: Dynamical systems.
- Sensory contributions to control.
- Principles of Motor Learning.
- Motor Development.
- Part 1 Exam revision and course review.
