Objectives
How the cardiovascular and respiratory systems operate and are co-ordinated to permit a suitable response to exercise stressLearning outcomes
By the end of the module students will be able to;
- define all the key features of the cardiorespiratory systems;
- explain how the cardiorespiratory systems operate and respond to exercise;
- analyse and explain findings from basic resting and submaximal cardiorespiratory testing.

Syllabus
The control and function of the heart including factors responsible for controlling blood pressure and flow of blood to tissues. The ventilation of the lungs, respiration and the control of these processes. Throughout an emphasis will be on how and why the systems and their control are important for exercise.

Private study
This course will make use of online learning resources included within the interactive physiology package available through blackboard interactive physiology and potentially Physio-ex, a similar package. Students will work through relevant example exercises on the theme of each of the lectures given encouraging them to develop their knowledge of the topics.Private study period is required to revise the lecture material and perform the data analysis and calculations that will be associated with the practical classes and detailed on a provided worksheet they complete.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student attendance will be monitored and the initial lab-report will be marked and returned by the end of the term. It will also be possible to observe who has attempted the online exercises so those failing to engage with the material can be spotted during the course.Methods of assessment
