This module is mutually exclusive with

SPSC3061 Research Project in Sport and Exercise Science II

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have:
- Applied and developed knowledge and skills gained from previous levels
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding as a consequence of investigative self led learning
- Researched into a topic raised through the programme in one module area, or into an issue that is related to more than one module
- Worked independently and/or through collaboration to design and execute a piece of research in the area of sport and exercise science
- Written a report on a piece of research in the area of sport and exercise science
- Demonstrated good analytical and presentational skills

Syllabus

Students will develop a working research project in consultation with staff. The title will then be approved by the supervisor and module manager. The supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the work in an advisory capacity, but the students will be expected to plan execute and interpret their own work. Projects may be individual, or group, insofar as the collection of data may be collaborative, but individual students will use the data to address different project titles.

Teaching methods

Primarily, student led learning.

Lectures: 1 x 1 hour introductory session

Seminars: 1 compulsory at the end of Semester 1

Tutorials: Regular, and as required by the supervisor or requested by the student

Private study

The balance of practical/experimental/ laboratory work and private study will depend on the research project

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students progress will be monitored by the individual supervisors. The title must be agreed by the end of week 3, semester 1. The supervisor will use the log book as a means of monitoring.

Methods of assessment

Oral presentation at the end of semester 1, reflecting work in progress (20%)
Process, as judged by the supervisor (10%)
Presentation of a word processed and bound dissertation (to include literature review, details of experimental work, results and discussion) in accordance with 'house style' of 8 - 10,000 words before the end of semester 2 ( 70%)
