Module summary
The module will provide students with essential anatomy relevant to those structures commonly stressed during physical activity, building on basic anatomy taught at undergraduate level and placing advanced knowledge in a physical activity and sports context. Understanding the fundamental limitations and capacity will allow the student to assess potential weaknesses in training regimes, and understand the reasons for common sports injuries. The blended learning approach will adopt a PBL style, beginning with dissection room experience using prosection samples and recap of salient structures, then tutorial discussion with appropriate case studies provided (e.g. frozen shoulder). Recommended eLearning resources will be identified (including online anatomy texts and recorded lectures), and tasks set according to the structure under study. Assessment will take the form of summative online MCQs, case study based short answer questions and group presentations. Delivery will involve academic experts in anatomy, and clinical experts with practical experience in exercise medicine. It will involve introductory tutorials followed by 5 x 2 week blocks with same format of guided reading and formative online MCQs, with clinical skills practical sessions and subsequent group tutorials. Assessment will take the form of summative online MCQs, group presentations and anatomy spot test.Objectives
The objectives are for students to:- recognise key structures relevant to sports activity;
- assess the functional capacity of key anatomical structures;
- gain experience in time management, self-directed learning, and on-line resource access;
- gain experience in effective working practices for teams in a clinical setting.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of key structures relevant to sports activity, as well as define the functional capacity of the following key anatomical structures:
- Shoulder
- Arm, elbow, hand and wrist
- Spine and pelvis
- Hip and knee
- Ankle and foot
They will summarise understanding in these areas and evaluate aspects most likely to incur injury/dysfunction.
Syllabus
The module will cover the following:
- advanced anatomy of important structures, including radiological features;
- linking dynamic functional anatomy of muscles, bones, nerves, blood supply in specific contexts;
- assessment of functional capacity (range of movement, flexibility etc.) relevant for susceptibility to damage.

Private study
Private study will include engaging with online resources provided, undertaking background reading associated with set topics, and preparation for practical assessment sessions.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
A member of the academic or clinical teaching staff will be allocated as tutor to the group, and will meet with students during the module to assess progress, discuss issues arising, and set objectives for the next study period.Students will have the opportunity to self-assess progress by means of formative MCQ assessments at strategic points in the module, based on suggested reading material and on-line resources available.
Clinical tutors will be available during the practical sessions to answer any questions the students may have, and monitor progress (e.g. assess clinical competence in assessments).
The reflective log will be reviewed and discussed with the Course Director on a regular basis.
On-line formative MCQ assessments will be made available at strategic points in the module.
Students will have 2 tutorials, plus feedback from tutor during practical sessions and following group presentations.
